I had no idea what coaching was until I was assigned a coach – Mr Gromick Thulani Ndlovu – as part of the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business Emerging Leaders Programme in 2006.

What an invaluable experience it turned out to be! The coaching sessions were held once a month over a 12 month period. During the course of the year we discussed issues that were both professional and personal, because it was quite clear that in my case they influenced each other.

Through the coaching sessions I was able to identify specific limitations and needs, and find appropriate ways to overcome the limitations in both the professional and personal areas.

I conclude by pointing out that the experience not only taught me that coaching is a necessity for all senior managers and leaders (indeed, for any person), but also that in Gromick I was fortunate to have a coach – with the appropriate personality, experience and advice – that could assist me to make tremendous strides in growth as a person.

Indeed, at our final session with Gromick I indicated that I still need further coaching with him beyond the 12 month period provided for in the Emerging Leaders Programme, and am working on making this a reality.
